The Toronto Consort presents Toward the Centre: Music for a Medieval Labyrinth with guests Sampradaya Dance on February 29 and March 1

Toronto, February 5, 2008 —The Toronto Consort presents a stunning program of music and dance based on the age-old idea of the labyrinth at Trinity St. Paul’s Centre on February 29 and March 1 at 8:00 pm. Entitled Toward the Centre: Music for a Medieval Labyrinth, the program features medieval and early renaissance music relating to the ancient labyrinths in the Christian, Muslim and Hindu traditions. Sampradaya Dance Creations performs a work created especially for these concerts. Music for a Medieval Labyrinth is part of the inaugural Sacred Spaces, Sacred Circles Arts Festival, a celebration of music and architecture taking place in the winter and spring of 2008. Concert tickets are available through the Box Office at (416) 964-6337. For more information visit www.torontoconsort.org

From Daedalus of ancient Greek myth, to Chaucer, to modern day references by Harry Potter and Sting, the labyrinth has long been a compelling symbol of the journey to the centre and back again, of the perils and the path of life, and of beauty and symmetry. Artistic Director David Fallis has designed Toward the Centre: Music for a Medieval Labyrinth as a palindrome (a term that usually refers to words that reads the same backwards and forwards, such as kayak), incorporating a labyrinth-like structure into the program itself.

Music for a Medieval Labyrinth begins and ends with a fragment of Gregorian chant, and includes lively medieval dance-songs originally performed by pilgrims who visited sacred places, rondeaux whose notation is a form of musical labyrinth, and sophisticated renaissance polyphony, most notably a movement from Josquin’s Missa l’homme armé and a motet by Dufay. The voices of The Toronto Consort are joined by an array of medieval instruments including lute, vielle, recorder and hurdy-gurdy.

Sampradaya Dance Creations is at the forefront of South Asian dance in Canada. Founded in 1990 by Artistic Director Lata Pada, the company is internationally recognized for forging new paradigms in Canada's dance landscape. Ms. Pada has choreographed a new ten-minute dance piece set to medieval pilgrim songs.

A cross-disciplinary Toronto arts festival Sacred Spaces, Sacred Circles brings artists of different cultures together in new creations combining music, dance, visual art and spoken word. The festival is a collaborative effort between The Toronto Consort, Doors Open Toronto and Tafelmusik under Co-Artistic Directors Alison Mackay and David Fallis.

Earlier in the month, The Toronto Consort embarks on a tour of Western Canada. The ensemble performs its popular Da Vinci Codex program in Vancouver, Lacombe, Calgary, and Regina from February 2 to 5. Visit www.torontoconsort.org for details.
