Flanders Recorder Quartet
February 27 and 28, 2009
“ … beguiling lightness of touch and clarity of texture …”
—Fanfare Magazine
Toronto, February 6, 2009 —The Toronto Consort is thrilled to welcome one of the world’s foremost recorder quartets, Belgium’s Flanders Recorder Quartet (FRQ), in the only Canadian stop on their North American tour, February 27 and 28, 8:00 pm at Trinity St Paul’s Centre. Their program Banchetto Musicale consists of French hors d’oeuvres, Italian antipasti, a queenly daily special from Belgium, and to finish, a scrumptious array of desserts. For tickets and information call the box office at (416) 964-6337 or visit www.torontoconsort.org
The Flanders Recorder Quartet consists of Bart Spanhove, Tom Beets, Joris Van Goethem, and Paul Van Loey, and travels around the world with a magnificent collection of more than 150 recorders in tow. Since its founding in 1987, the FRQ has evolved into one of the world’s top ensembles. After more than 1500 concerts on five continents, including some in world-famous halls in Tokyo, New York, and Salzburg, the ensemble is considered among the finest of its kind.
For its Toronto engagement, the FRQ offers a veritable musical banquet of virtuoso recorder works ranging over many centuries. Banchetto Musicale is built around a dégustation menu theme, featuring a French apéritif (by Louis-Antoine Dornel), an Italian antipasto (by Tarquinio Merula), a sorbet (Bach’s concerto in A minor, BWV 596), a speciality of the house (Vaughan Williams’ 1939 Suite for Pipes), and a spectacular main by contemporary Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost: his 2002 work I Continenti. Two dessert offerings that span over 500 years conclude the feast: Frans Geysen’s 2002 piece On the Bottle, written especially for the ensemble, and three medieval songs in an arrangement by the FRQ.
The FRQ is also known for its many prize-winning recordings on Harmonia Mundi, Archiv/Deutsche Grammophon, Ricercar, and OPUS 111. The 2007 recording Banchetto Musicale marked the ensemble’s 20th anniversary and is available on the AEOLUS label.
