The Toronto Consort presents
A Musical Bestiary
March 23 & 24

Melville is one of Canada's finest recorder players and a musician with the imagination to bring an element of playfulness to what could easily sound like formulaic note-spinning.”

Toronto, March 6, 2012 —Just in time for the arrival of spring, the Consort’s own recorder virtuosa Alison Melville curates A Musical Bestiary, a program of music to celebrate the creatures of earth, sea and sky, and some magnificent mythical beasts. The concerts take place at 8 PM on March 23 and 24, 2012 at Trinity-St. Paul's Centre. For tickets and information, call the box office at (416) 964-6337 or visit www.torontoconsort.org.

Well-known to Toronto audiences for her Bird Project, Melville brings her verve and imagination to this program of music from Renaissance Europe. A Musical Bestiary includes vocal and instrumental music for one to six parts by Banchieri, Gibbons, Ravenscroft, Jannequin, Lassus, Weelkes, Arcadelt, Morley, Playford, and Phillips, among others. Some of the more light-hearted selections include “The Ape, the Monkey, and Baboon”, “The Counterpoint of the Animals”, and “Le chant des oyseaux” by Nicolas Gombert.

Alison Melville has performed as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician across Canada, the USA, Japan, Iceland and in Europe. Besides her activities as a member of the Toronto Consort, she appears frequently with Tafelmusik, Opera Atelier, and many other ensembles. Melville is a member of Canada’s ‘arctic fusion’ band Ensemble Polaris, whose latest CD Uncharted Waters was just released.

Melville’s Bird Project — an ongoing exploration of artistic interaction with the natural world — captured the attention of audiences and is typical of the imaginative ideas she brings to concert programming.
