Flashing rhythms, irrepressible spirit, soulful sonorities – there’s nothing quite like the music of early baroque Spain and Latin America. And at Christmastime, the music seems to become even more ecstatic. Guitars, lutes, harp, bajón, voices, and, of course, wonderful percussion make this a Christmas fiesta like nothing else in the city.

“In the past several years, I have come to realize that once in a while, we can glimpse perfection and all thoughts and words fail us and we are simply
overwhelmed with joy. Yesterday afternoon, I was in heaven.”

The Original Carmina Burana

Discovered in a monastery in Austria, the original Carmina Burana is one of the most beautiful collections of medieval song, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Songs of love, songs of springtime, drinking songs, spiritual songs and lively dance tunes all grace this anthology, attributed to the wandering scholars of the day. The Toronto Consort brings alive these fabulous glimpses of an earlier era, with voices, hurdy-gurdy, fiddle, recorder, lute and harp.

“I can’t remember a better performance or more beautiful music anywhere. The Toronto Consort is a rare gem.”

"This dear band - so expert, so rhythmically alive, so humourous, at times so touching - has such an infectious good time doing what it does well, I just sit and smile. "
